About Us
The Greenmount Road Church of Christ held its first service Sunday, November 2, 2003, when the Belleville Church of Christ and the Villa Hills Church of Christ consolidated.
Belleville Church of Christ
The exact beginning dated of the Belleville Church of Christ is uncertain. A Christian woman, remembered only as Grandma King, knew a Church of Christ was needed in an area convenient to Scott Air Force Base. The earliest record is dated June 14, 1945, and the church was renting the Philharmonic Hall on High Street. In 1954, the church rented a new place to worship and was known as the Twenty-ninth and Main Street Church of Christ. Brother H.L. Starling was the first full–time minster. In 1964, the church purchased land at Hwy. 161 and Greenmount Road and built the present building. Upon completion, growth accelerated as new programs were started and the area became more developed.
Villa Hills Church of Christ
Villa Hills Church of Christ began when a few members from the Maplewood church in Cahokia saw the need for a congregation in West Belleville. They purchased a house and lot on Edgewood Dr. and remodeled it as their meeting place. On July 6, 1958, services were held for the first time; and Trustees were appointed. Christian men from the area filled the pulpit each week until Ray Christman was retained as the church’s first minister. With financial help from congregations in Russellville, Arkansas and Woodfield, Ohio, the members were able to purchase land and began construction of a new building on Villa Drive. In November of 1961, around 30 people met for the first time in the new building. A minister’s residence was converted to classrooms in 1966 and a kitchen added in 1973. Mike Mitchell became the full-time minister in 1987.
Greenmount Rd. Church of Christ
In 2003, a proposal to merge the two congregations was presented by members of the Belleville church to the members of the Villa Hills church. After several months of discussions, the new Greenmount Rd. Church of Christ was established. The Trustees and members decided to use the Belleville location, and Mike Mitchell was asked to serve as the minister for the new congregation.
Since the merger, the church has experienced a wonderful period of growth. Efforts are being made to accommodate community outreach ministries and to expand our efforts to include ministries to children, youth, young adults, and senior members. Since May 2005 we have appointed five elders and 10 deacons.
The Villa Hills property was sold, and the Greenmount Road facilities have been renovated to meet our present needs. The church has purchased ten acres about a mile north on Greenmount Road for future growth and development.
The Lord truly has blessed us as a congregation, and we look forward to what He can do through us as we serve Him in the future.
